Very boring painting.

I can’t even make a comment about Teniers The Younger’s biography as there is nothing particularly interesting. Only, maybe, that the nickname “The younger” refers to the fact that he was the son of another David Teniers who, of course, had the nickname of “The elder”.

In this canvas, we see a group of peasants in an archery contest. However, this contest is more of a hobby than a serious competition. The atmosphere is relaxed and we see only one of the characters about to take a shot with the bow. The others are looking at the situation or just chatting to each other. There is a careless individual who walks very near the line of fire, which is definitely a bad idea and makes us think in an accident about to happen. But, maybe, with the accident, the painting would have been a little more interesting… but, of course, it would be a much more gore version than the original Teniers’.

The only thing I like about the painting is its dynamism. The landscape is not focused in an action, but rather in a situation as a whole. The location of the characters has no order and I think this makes the picture interesting: Teniers doesn’t seem to want to focus in a certain aspect of the competition but he keeps himself in a cold (although boring) objectivity.

Thumbs down for Teniers.
